Terry's Story
"Desistal reached out to me recently to see if I’d be willing to share my story to help other parents going through the exact same thing. At first, I was hesitant—talking about alcohol habits isn't easy—but if sharing this helps even one mum break the cycle, it’s worth every word."
The kitchen was quiet, but inside my head, the familiar 5:00 PM noise was already building.
It was that long stretch of the evening between finishing work, getting dinner on the stove, and managing meltdown hour. For months, my automatic response to that daily weight had been a glass of pinot grigio. Then a second while cooking. By the time my seven-year-old son, Leo, asked me to build a Lego tower on the living room floor, my mind was already drifting under a soft, wine-induced haze.
I wasn't getting wild or out of control; I was just absent. The real toll came the next morning—waking up at 6:30 AM to an alarm that felt like an assault, carrying a dull headache, a heavy heart, and that lingering, quiet regret. I was physically in the house, but I was missing my children’s childhoods.
On top of the fatigue, I was paying a heavy physical price. Living with Crohn's disease meant my gut was already sensitive, but drinking alcohol was constantly fanning the flames. Every glass of wine was triggering flare-ups, chronic digestive distress, and deep inflammation that left me utterly depleted. Between the empty liquid calories and constant bloating, my weight had crept up, making me feel uncomfortable and sluggish in my own skin.
There was also the financial side of it that I tried not to look at too closely. When I actually added up what we were spending on wine every week—between the bottles at home and casual drinks out—it was staggering. Hundreds of pounds a month literally vanishing into thin air, funding a habit that left me physically ill and emotionally disconnected.
The turning point came on a bright Saturday morning. Leo pulled open the curtains, jumping on the bed, asking if we could go to the park to fly his new kite. I lay there under the duvet, fighting off both a hangover and another painful stomach flare-up, squinting against the sunlight, and whispered, "Give Mummy half an hour, sweetie..."
Watching his little face fall was the break I needed. I didn't want to spend my weekends recovering from my evenings, destroying my gut, and watching our family holiday fund get drained by a nightly routine I didn't even truly enjoy anymore.
That week, after looking for something to help break the routine without relying on sheer willpower alone, I ordered Desistal.
To be honest, during the first few days, I didn't feel much of a difference at all. The 5:00 PM habit still tugged at me, and I wondered if it was going to work. But I stuck with it, taking it daily. Then, right around the two-week mark, a noticeable shift happened. The relentless volume of the cravings dropped significantly. When 5:00 PM rolled around, that intense physical itch to reach for the corkscrew just wasn't screaming at me anymore. The evening noise finally quieted down.
Three weeks in, the real shift hit me.
Without alcohol constantly irritating my system, my Crohn's symptoms settled down significantly. My gut felt calmer, the painful stomach spasms eased, and for the first time in years, my body felt predictable and strong. Cutting out all those late-night wine calories meant the stubborn weight began dropping off naturally, too—I felt lighter, leaner, and had twice as much energy. Combining that physical transformation with waking up clear-headed was life-changing. Plus, all that money I used to spend on alcohol was now quietly stacking up in a dedicated envelope for our family holidays.
It was a Sunday afternoon, down at the local meadow with Leo and my four-year-old daughter, Maya. When Maya kicked off her shoes, I dropped my bag and joined them right on the grass.
We spent hours lying there under the sun, pointing out cloud shapes, laughing until our stomachs hurt—with zero pain, zero fatigue—and planning the family campervan trip we've been dreaming of taking next summer. I looked over at my kids—really looked at them—without the brain fog, without the Crohn's exhaustion, and without counting down the minutes until I could sit on the couch with a glass of wine.
For the first time in years, I’m not just surviving my evenings, battling flare-ups, or watching my health and money evaporate. I’m truly living them, hangover-free, building memories and adventures the way I always wanted to.
