Grace’s Story
Grace, 38, shares why she stopped drinking and how she copes with common triggers like holidays.
Holidays can be a tricky time for me when it comes to dealing with cravings.
I’m sure most people who want to cut down or quit drinking will agree that going on holiday can be a major trigger. Even before I left for a holiday, I would plan to drink at the airport, and when I arrived at my destination, I always wished I hadn’t bothered.
I’m quite an active person, so feeling groggy and tired after drinking made me feel like I was missing out on quality time with my husband and my boy, Daniel.
Desistal gives me the extra support I need to curb cravings and enjoy time with my family without the hangover.
If you are serious about cutting down on your drinking, I would recommend keeping busy, getting a good nights sleep and doing things that make you feel good about yourself.
The best advice I can give you, though, is to get out of the mindset of “I’m going to drink on holiday; it’s too hard not to, I deserve it, and I’ll quit again when I get home”.
I used to make life so much harder for myself with that mindset. I used to say ‘I deserve this drink’, but I actually think my life is so much better without drinking, and I deserve sobriety.
